United Way of Indian River County to Distribute Free
Discount Prescription Cards

United Way of Indian River County today announced that they will be distributing 5000 free Familywize Prescription Cards starting July 1. Discount cards can be obtained from the United Way office at 1836 14th Avenue in downtown Vero Beach during business hours. People with Internet access can also print a card by visiting the website at www.FamilyWize.com as well as look up drug prices and the list of participating pharmacies. Most pharmacies across the U.S. honor the cards and there is no cost for the card nor eligibility requirements.

The FamilyWize card can save participants about 30 percent on drug purchases, said Michael Kint United Way CEO. Prescription drugs "are a concern for just about everyone across the board in one way or another, and this is a great way of making sure you have a level playing field for anyone who needs to get a hold of these," Kint said. The program does not have any age or income restrictions, and people with insurance can benefit from the program if they need a prescription that isn't covered, Kint said. "For the most part, you just have to have the card. You can bring it in. You show it to them, and it can be used by anybody, even if you have insurance," he said. "Let's say you're taking a drug for allergies and your insurance doesn't cover that specific pharmaceutical; you can use this card to get a reduced rate on that."

Locally, Indian River County also offers a discount prescription card through Caremark. The United Way Familywize program can be used in those cases when the prescription isn’t covered under the Caremark program. “We want to offer this as an additional benefit to the community,” said Kint, “families can simply continue to use and try their Caremark card, and if a discount isn’t offered they can then try the Familywize card.” The programs are not meant to be used in combination but rather as a supplemental benefit.

The Familywize cards are being distributed free of charge, courtesy of the United Way of Indian River County, and more than 345 other United Way agencies around the country in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, as part of in-kind donation by Membership Services Corporation, located in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, and its industry partners. Printing for one million prescription cards was donated by another Pennsylvania company, Independent Graphics of Pittston, Pennsylvania.

Developing Programs for a Tough Economic Forecast

The Familywize Prescription Card program is the first of several new initiatives the United Way of Indian River County is developing to aid people during tough economic times. In addition to the Familywize cards, the United Way Board of Directors is in the process of developing a Financial Stability Initiative which will be implemented later this fall and aims to help families not only increase income through the Earned Income Tax Credit but will offer credit counseling and other services. “There is a real need in this community to increase access and information about financial services for families who are struggling, we hope to be able to bring the right people to the table to see what can be done in these tough economic times,” said Kint.
