VOAD

Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster

Indian River County VOAD

Mission –
IRC VOAD is a humanitarian association of local non-profit organizations fostering efficient, streamlined delivery of resources to people affected by disaster, while eliminating unnecessary duplication of effort, through cooperation and coordination in the four phases of disaster: preparation, response, recovery and mitigation. All non-profit, faith-based and service organizations in Indian River County are encouraged to join and participate.

Organization Structure –
VOAD is a national non-operational umbrella organization, which gives each of its members the privilege of independently – but cooperatively – providing and implementing its resources when responding to disasters.

The Indian River VOAD meets on a regular basis to plan for and to educate the members about how they may serve their community before, during and after a disaster.  The organization seeks to prevent the duplication of effort through collaboration of available services in natural or manmade disaster such as fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, flash floods and most notably hurricanes and wildfires.  Information resources are:  disaster supplies distribution, temporary housing, childcare, volunteer coordination and pastoral care.

Our focus is on collaboration and communications for disasters. We provide education and training and opportunities to serve our community when it is most needed.

Membership
Membership is open to any non-profit, faith-based and service organizations in Indian River County that desire to serve our community after a disaster. Always remember that disasters come in both big and small sizes and can happen at any time...year round. From Hurricanes to single structure fires...VOAD is here to help.

How your gift makes an impact

aldo Bella

Aldo Bella

Independence. A sense of purpose. A semblance of the man he used to be. These are the gifts Laura Bella counts off when she describes what the Abilities Resource Center's Employment Program, a United Way funded program, has brought to her husband of eighteen years, Aldo Bella. Two years ago February 16th this father and grandfather's life was changed tragically when a piece of heavy equipment injured him on the job. The resulting traumatic brain injury forever changed Aldo's life. He's not even close to being the man he was before. He was so active. There isn't a day I don't get upset about it, says Laura. Desperate for something she could do for Aldo while she went to work, she found the Employment Program at the Abilities Resource Center where Aldo now works as a groundskeeper and maintenance assistant. This job has given him so much, it's been the best thing I could have hoped for, states Laura. When you give to the United Way, you invest in keeping the doors open for 43 programs at our 30 partner agencies. Because of you, Aldo has a place to go to and a job to do. Your gift to the United Way today provides more than dollars to agencies, it gives peace of mind to struggling families, hope to those who have lost so much, and purpose to the work we do for our community.
