United Way of Indian River County is once again coordinating the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, offering free help to people who earned $55,000 or less in 2018.
Families with low to moderate income may miss out on substantial tax credits if they don’t have assistance filing their returns. All United Way VITA volunteers are IRS-trained and certified every year to provide free tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in Indian River County. They ensure that taxpayers receive credits due to them such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.
This service will be available starting Wednesday, January 30, and ending on Monday, April 15. This year there are five VITA locations throughout Indian River County: Wabasso, Sebastian, Fellsmere, and two locations in Vero Beach. Each location will operate on different days and times, and appointments are necessary for all locations. All times, days of operation, and locations can be found online at www.UnitedWayIRC.org/FreeTaxPrep. Clients should bring their valid picture ID, social security card (or ITIN numbers) for everybody in the household, a copy of their 2017 tax return (if filed), W-2 Forms from all jobs worked in 2018, as well as any other relevant tax documentation.
“Tax season always has a way of creeping up on all of us, and there’s not always an easy or Free solution to making sure that when you do file your taxes, that you are getting the most out of how you file. That’s why we so often see repeat users of our VITA services. It’s easy, it’s free, and you could possibly receive more in your return than if you filed on your own,” explained Eve Ballance, United Way Community Impact Coordinator. “There’s just no reason to pass up on money that belongs to you,” Balance added.
Last year 877 returns from Indian River County were filed through this program, resulting in $946,739 in refunds and $209,000 in tax credits. It is estimated that about $99,000 was saved in filing fees.
Appointments are now being accepted for all sites and can be made by calling 772-203-5766. For more information about the program, locations, and times, visit www.UnitedWayIRC.org/FreeTaxPrep, or call 772-567-8900 ext. 120.
